Double Exclusion to Double Embrace: Caring for the Spiritual Care Needs of Transgender, Gender Non-Conforming, and Nonbinary People and Communities
In his 2022 dissertation, "Double Exclusion to Double Embrace: Caring for the Spiritual Care Needs of Transgender, Gender Non-Conforming, and Nonbinary People and Communities," Angel Celeste Collie explores the historical and ongoing challenges that transgender, gender non-conforming, and nonbinary (TGNCNB) individuals face within Christian contexts. Collie highlights how these individuals have often experienced rejection, physical harm, and spiritual violence, leading to a strained relationship with religious communities. Even in affirming churches, there is frequently a lack of understanding regarding their unique spiritual needs. To address this, Collie draws from memoirs and resources created by TGNCNB individuals to equip pastors and lay leaders with the knowledge and tools necessary to provide meaningful spiritual care. His work emphasizes the importance of fostering true sanctuary and support for TGNCNB individuals within faith communities.
